LUMI Summary - Modules

LUMI AI in Brightspace

LUMI is now available inside Brightspace, for faculty only. LUMI leverages Anthropic’s Large Language Model (LLM) Claude by using content provided by the course creator.

SUNY’s agreement with D2L protects Faculty intellectual property by ensuring that:

  • D2L does not own input content
  • D2L does not own output content
  • D2L will not use input content to train their Generative AI models

SUNY’s agreement with D2L requires that users will not represent that output content is human generated when it is not.

LUMI Summary

The LUMI Summary tool in Brightspace provides quick, AI-generated overviews of your Brightspace course modules. These summaries help students understand what to expect, making your course content more accessible and easier to navigate. LUMI automatically generates a short summary of the content in a module, uses natural language to describe the main ideas and learning objectives and helps students preview or review content before engaging deeply.

Open your course in Brightspace, and open the module you would like to create a summary for. When you open the module, you will click on Add a Description, at the top of the module.

When the description options open up, click on the Generate Summary (LUMI AI icon) in the upper right corner of the text box.

A new page will open up with two options for what materials you want the summary to be created from. You can choose to

  • Include all activities in the module
  • Select the activities from the module that you want included

* Please take note of the specific formats that are used. PDF is not currently supported.

While the AI is summarizing your chosen content, you will see a screen with a blue box that says Generating Summaries. You have the option to cancel the process.

LUMI will create three summaries for you. Each gets increasingly more detailed and complex. You can scroll through them, choose the one you would like by selecting the radio button next to it and then clicking the blue Insert button.

The summary will be inserted into your course description. Click the blue update button to save the new summary description.
