Assigning Special Access for a Quiz

Special Access allows instructors to set specific settings for quizzes for individual students or groups of students. An instructor might provide a student extra time on a test, allow an extra attempt on a quiz, or to provide access to a quiz on a different day.

From inside your course, select the Quizzes tool in the NavBar. On the Quizzes page select, the drop-down menu next to the title of the quiz you would like give special access to. In the drop-down menu, select Edit.

When the page opens up, on the right side of the page in the Availability and Dates section, choose the Manage Special Access option.

When the next page opens up, you'll need to choose from the two options and then click the Add Users to Special Access button.

On the Special Access Properties page, add specific dates as needed to match the alternate times (due date, start date, end date).

If the timing of the quiz is to be adjusted, select the either of the following settings:

  • Override Time Limit / No Time Limit - If you want to remove the time limit, select No Time Limit.

  • Override Time Limit / Set Time Limit – Select this option if you want to grant extra time in terms of quiz time multipliers or minutes in the New Time Limit, Multiplier of Original Quiz Time, or Extra Time fields:

  • To set a new time limit, enter the number of minutes in the New time limit field.
  • To grant the additional time in terms of quiz time multipliers, enter the number of times in the Multiplier of original quiz time field. For example, if the student needs time and a half for the quiz, the multiplier would be 1.5.
  • To grant the additional time in terms of minutes, enter the number of extra minutes in the Extra time field.

Override behavior when time limit is exceeded – Select this option if you want to override the settings for what happens when students exceed the time limit.

To edit the When the time limit expires settings, select one of the following options:

  • Automatically submit the quiz attempt.
  • Flag as “exceeded time limit” and allow the learner to continue working.
  • Do nothing: the time limit is recommended, not enforced.

Scroll down to Attempts. If more attempts are to be given, check the Override attempts allowed box.  Enter the number of attempts allowed and click Apply.

Scroll down to Users. Click the box next to the names of the student(s) who requires the special access. If you do not see the student’s name, use the Search field to type the student’s name, then check the box to select the student.

Click the Save at the bottom of the page.

Scroll down to Special Access, and verify the correct students have been given special access. Then click Save and Close.

Finally click Save and Close for the Quiz.
