External Email Labeling
To better alert Cortland students, faculty and staff of possible phishing emails, Information Resources will start tagging incoming emails from external sources.
All emails that are sent from an email account outside of the cortland.edu domain are given a short disclaimer in the body of the email.
CAUTION: This email came from outside SUNY Cortland. Don't click links or open attachments unless you recognize the sender and know the content is safe. Please forward this to thc@cortland.edu if you think this email is suspicious.
Phishing emails pose as reputable sources to trick recipients into giving up sensitive information. Often times, malicious actors pose as Cortland administrators, deans and vice presidents. IR has introduced tagging to help the Cortland community better determine the actual sender of the message.
Are all emails tagged as external malicious?
Not all emails tagged as being external are or should be considered suspicious, they are simply coming from a source external to Cortland users. The message could be a friend, colleague, family member, vendor, service provider, etc. Below is an example of an email from a vendor flagged as external.
Can I opt out of [EXTERNAL] tagging in my inbox?
No, external tagging is added to all IR-supported mailboxes.
What do I do if I received a message that I think is phishing?
As always, if you receive an email that you suspect to be phishing or a scam, please forward the message to phishing@cortland.edu for review.
