Password Management

Our password management service is for SUNY Cortland account holders to securely manage their password. Information Systems and Security utilizes several tools to protect your SUNY Cortland credentials. Some of these tools are behind the scenes and some are visible to our users.

Managing Your Password

Your password must be at least 8 characters long and it must contain at least one capital letter, one lower case letter, one number, and one symbol.

We encourage the use of passphrases. Passphrases are typically longer and more complex than single-word passwords. This makes them harder for attackers to crack. Passphrases tend to be easier to remember for the account holder.

Starting in Fall 2024, all SUNY Cortland account holders will directly manage their password through Microsoft 365. Users can start now via this link: https://cortland.edu/passwordreset

Multi-Factor Authentication

SUNY Cortland uses two multi-factor authentication solutions. Currently, all employees utilize Duo and students use Microsoft MFA. Multi-factor authentication confirms your identity when you log into Cortland systems.

Your first factor of authentication is your username and password. Your second factor is Duo/Microsoft MFA. Your second factor prevents anyone but you from accessing your account, even if they know your password.
