Teams - Adding Files

Microsoft Teams is a team collaboration application which is part of the Microsoft 365 family of products, offering workspace chat and video conferencing, file storage, and integration of proprietary and third-party applications and services.

Attach file in a post

  1. Go to the Posts tab in the channel where you want the file.
  2. Start a new conversation or reply to an existing one
  3. Select the plus sign at the bottom of the post window

  1. Select Attach file from the menu:

  1. Choose location of the file, from the cloud/OneDrive, your Teams or Channels, or from your computer

  1. Select a file
  2. Choose Open
  3. Type any additional message you would like to add
  4. Select the Post button

Note: The links to files attached to a post will reside in the post. The files will not be added to the Files tab automatically.

 

Add to the Files tab

Every channel has a Files tab, where most shared files will be stored.

Upload files:

  1. Select the channel where you would like to store the files
  2. Go to the Files tab
  3. Select Upload
  4. Choose Files, Folders or Templates from the menu to open your file manager

  5. Select the file you would like to upload to the team
  6. Click Open

Create your file directly in Teams:

  1. Select the channel where you would like to store the files
  2. Go to the Files tab
  3. Select the New button

  1. Choose the type of file you want to create – this will open in the online version of the app
  2. The file will be available in the Teams channel

Move or copy from One Drive:

  1. Open your OneDrive
  2. Select the file or folder you would like to move or copy to a team
  3. Select Move to or Copy to. The commands are found either on the top menu or on the menu opened by selecting the ellipsis next to the document name

  4. When the dialog box opens some teams and groups will be listed on the left side.
  5. Choose ‘More places’ to see all of the teams and groups you are a part of

  6. Select the team to move the file to, to see the channel and file structure of the destination team
  7. Select the folder where you would like to move or copy the file
  8. Click Copy here/Move here

Move or copy from another team:

  1. Open the File tab of the channel where your file is found
  2. Select the file
  3. Select the ellipsis either in the top menu or next to the file name to open the menu
  4. Select Move to/Copy to from the menu
  5. Select the team from the left column, or select ‘More places’ to see all the teams and groups
  6. Select the team or group to move or copy the file to, to open the channel and folder structure of the team
  7. Select the folder where you would like the file
  8. Select Copy here/Move here
