Dear Faculty and Staff,
We want to inform you about an upcoming change to our Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) system. To better manage rising costs while maintaining the same level of security and functionality, we will be transitioning from Duo Multifactor Authentication (Duo MFA) to Microsoft Multifactor Authentication (Microsoft MFA).
Microsoft MFA offers the same features and protection as Duo, ensuring continued security for your SUNY Cortland account.
Migration Timeline:
Supported MFA Devices:
- Microsoft Authenticator Phone App
- Mobile Phone SMS text or Voice Call
- Office Phone Voice Call
- UbiKey USB Key – existing users will need a new key, more info to come soon.
What You Need to Do:
Start reviewing your existing device or phone number for Microsoft MFA (app, text message, etc). When you enrolled in Self Service Password Reset (SSPR) earlier this semester, you were prompted to set up a device or phone number. That same method will be available for Microsoft MFA. If you only have a single device method enrolled, we recommend enrolling a second backup method, especially if you only have the app enrolled.
Microsoft MFA and SSPR share the same device profile.
For more information about Microsoft MFA or how to manage your devices, please visit our Microsoft MFA service page (link below) in the Information Resources Service Catalog. On this page, you may also submit a ticket for assistance.

We do realize some of you are using Duo for authentication beyond SUNY Cortland, we will address how to migrate or convert to a personal account at a later date. The app will continue to function after your migration date but not for access to SUNY Cortland systems.
If you have any questions or need assistance, feel free to reach out to the Technology Help Center at cortland.edu/techhelp
Thank you for your cooperation as we make this transition!
Best,
Josh
