Automated Workstation Patching

Updating software is crucial for workstation security and maintenance, yet it can be a cumbersome task for both employees and PC Services. We understand that faculty and staff prefer to focus on their work rather than managing hardware, software and operating system updates. To address this, we have implemented automated patching using the KACE Agent. This tool is already installed on all SUNY Cortland-owned workstations and actively updates your system regularly.

This process typically occurs discreetly in the background, without you ever knowing, minimizing disruptions to your work flow. Our goal is to streamline this process, saving time for both you and us, while enhancing security against potential vulnerabilities. Sometimes, however, updates may require a reboot or user interaction, and we'll notify you beforehand. If this occurs, you might notice a pop-up on your computer like this one:

KACE Desktop Alert

To proceed with the update, click "Ok". If you're unable to update immediately, you can temporarily dismiss the notification by selecting "Snooze", which postpones it for 10 minutes.

Will KACE updates automatically reboot my computer (without my permission)?

Potentially. Workstations are at their most vulnerable during the period of time between when the patches are applied, and a restart is needed. The KACE Agent will remind you numerous times that you need to restart your computer but will eventually restart the machine if ignored for too long.
