Overview
OneDrive backup sync is the process by which files on a user’s device are continuously synchronized with Microsoft OneDrive cloud storage. This provides backup, availability across devices, and version protection.
The process is handled by the OneDrive Sync Client, which runs in the background after a user signs in.
1. Initial Setup
When your computer is upgraded to Windows 11 the OneDrive Backup/Sync will be enabled for
- Desktop
- Documents
- Pictures
The other files that you have in your OneDrive will also be synced to your computer. Everything will be visible in your File Explorer in a local folder named ‘YourFirstName – SUNY Cortland’
2. How it works:
Desktop, Documents, and Pictures folders are redirected from their original locations on your computer, to the OneDrive folder
Changes still appear seamless to the user.
Files are synced to the cloud automatically.
3. Continuous Change Detection
When it detects:
- A new file
- A file edit
- A file deletion
- A rename or move
it queues that change for syncing.
4. Upload (Backup) Process
When files are uploaded to OneDrive:
- Only the changed portions of a file are uploaded (not the entire file).
- Compression & encryption
- Data is encrypted in transit (HTTPS/TLS).
- Cloud storage
- File is stored in Microsoft’s cloud.
- Metadata (timestamps, permissions) is preserved.
Large files upload in chunks and can resume if interrupted.
