Logging in & Finding Your Way Around

  • Log in with your username and password.
  • Your username should be the same as your campus UserID (for example, robert.smith)
    • note: you can also use your Cortland email address
  • Your password is not necessarily the same as your campus (myRedDragon) password as your WordPress password is maintained separately.
    • You can reset your WordPress password by using the "Lost your password?" link on the login screen.
  • You’ll land on the Dashboard (the control center).

Key left-hand menu items you’ll use most

  • Posts – blog articles
  • Pages – static pages (Home, About, Contact)
  • Media - place to upload images and files
  • Appearance – menus, widgets, themes
  • Plugins – extra features
  • Settings – site-wide options

 

Updating Page Content (Text, Images, Buttons)

  1. Go to Pages → All Pages
  2. Click the page you want to edit.
  3. You’ll see the Editor:
  4. Click directly on text to edit it.
  5. Click Update

Editing Menus (Navigation Bar)

Menus control the links at the top (or side) of your site.

  1. Go to Appearance → Menus

  1. Select the correct menu (often “Primary” or “Main Menu”)
  2. To add a page:
    1. Check the page on the left
    2. Click Add to Menu
  3. To reorder:
    1. Drag and drop menu items
  4. To remove an item:
    1. Click the arrow → Remove
  5. Click Save Menu

If you don’t see your menu:

Look for Menu Settings and ensure it’s assigned to the correct location (e.g., “Primary Menu”).

Customizing the Site (Colors, Fonts, Logo)

  1. Go to Appearance → Customize
  2. Options vary by theme, but often include:
    1. Site identity (logo, site title)
    2. Colors
    3. Fonts
    4. Header & footer layout
  3. Changes show in a live preview
  4. Click Publish when done

 Customizer options depend heavily  on your theme.

Editing the Homepage

In this theme the homepage content is made up by the widgets. Widgets are small content blocks in sidebars or footers.

Go to Appearance → Widgets

  1. Click the area (Footer, Sidebar)
  2. Add/edit blocks just like pages
  3. Click Update

Common widget edits:

  • Update footer text
  • Add social icons
  • Remove unwanted widgets
