If your Teams application in prompting you to update to the new teams, you should be able to click on the prompt and follow the instructions to update to the new version.

If it is not letting you update, you may be on a version of Microsoft Windows that doesn't support the new version of Teams.

 

Getting your Windows Version

You can update to new teams as long as your Windows version is at least 21H2

You can check your version of Windows by following these steps:

1. On your keyboard hold the windows key and hit the 'i' key on your keyboard

2. This will bring up the Windows Settings screen. Hit the System icon.

3. In the panel on the left, scroll down to About and click on it

4. The number you are looking for is labeled Version

What to do if your Windows version is not high enough

If your computer is not on a high enough version of Windows to update to the new Teams, Campus Technology Services can evaluate if your machine can be updated to a newer version of Windows, or if the machine is ineligible for update and needs to be replaced.

Fill out a Teams request using this form and be sure to include your computer's Z number and version of Windows.

My computer lets me update to new Teams but it is still opening old teams

The new teams installs on your computer a s a separate application. If you have a shortcut to Teams on your desktop or pinned to your task bar, it will be pointed at the old version of Teams

Note, that if you right click on a pinned shortcut to Teams, it will say if it is "Teams Classic"

If you are on a new enough version of Windows and have updated Teams but are still seeing messages in Teams to update, be sure to check if your shortcuts are pointed at Teams Classic.

If they are, delete the shortcuts, and search for teams in the start menu. launch the version not labeled "Teams Classic" then you can right click on it and re-pin it to your task bar.
