Microsoft Teams/Group Lifespan (Expiration and Renewal)

Expiration

Teams/Groups without activity in the last 365 days will be set to expire. Owners will be notified via email at 30 days, 15 days, and 1 day before expiration. Information Resources staff will be notified if a Team/Group does not have an owner.

Any team/group that is not renewed will be deleted. After deletion, the team/group can be restored by the owner or an administration for the next 30 days. 

Renewal

Teams/Groups can be renewed by completing any of the following user actions:

  1. View, edit, download, move, share, or upload files in your Team/Group
  2. Add a member or Join Team/Group
  3. Read/write Team/Group message
  4. Teams: Visit a Teams channel

Change Date

Change effective 10/2023. Any Teams/Groups older than 365 days at the time of change will be set to 35 days until expiration. If activity in the Team/Group occurs between 35 and 30 days - the Team/Group will be renewed. At 30 days, if there is not activity, owners can expect the first notification of impending expiration via email.
